Winter 2010

Winter Is Here!

Dear Friends,

Timothy J. Mitchell

Winter is here and the Chicago Park District invites you to join us in celebrating the season. Parks across the city are offering a menu of programs, activities and special events designed to fight hibernation and bring on the fun. In addition, our indoor pools, fitness centers and other facilities are a great way to get off the couch and into your neighborhood park!

Bundle up and bring the entire family out to experience winter at its best. The Chicago Park District's fifth annual Polar Adventure Days at Northerly Island offer visitors face-to-face encounters with live animals, fun winter activities, and the chance to watch ice sculpture carvings and to create nature inspired crafts. Our ice skating rinks, nestled throughout the city, are also a great way to enjoy the brisk air. Rinks are open now through February 28th. Some rinks offer lessons, pick up hockey games and rink rental for special events.

Once again, the Chicago Park District teams up with the Mayor's Office of Special Events to host Mayor Daley's Holiday Sports Fest, December 27th and 28th. We will transform McCormick Place into an athletic arena with sports and physical activities for the entire family. Each year, more than 50,000 sports enthusiasts enjoy free activities offered at the Chicago Park District Play Pavilion, which features an inflatable tumbling arena, a 24 ft. climbing wall, virtual volleyball, a 100 square-foot skate park and much more!

Whether you prefer the frosty outdoors or the warmth of our field houses, the Chicago Park District provides the ideal winter getaway. From African American History Month celebrations to Daddy-Daughter Dances and chocolate house making classes, the parks offer something exciting for everyone.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Sincerely,
Timothy J. Mitchell
Chicago Park District General Superintendent & CEO
